Case
If you asked thirty visitors what Vleeshaak was, you’d likely get thirty different answers. The series took place in the former Antwerp slaughterhouse, an iconic site left dormant since 2006. Across two editions, the space — still marked by the hooks once used to move heavy carcasses through the building — was temporarily reactivated as a hybrid environment where music and installation coexisted. Rather than following fixed programming, the nights were guided by curiosity, discovery, and the behaviour of those moving through the space.

The invitation
Visitors drawn to Vleeshaak’s curiosity weren’t positioned as spectators or consumers, but as contributors — shaping the atmosphere through presence, interaction, and movement. That involvement began before the nights themselves. Access was intentionally physical: tickets had to be collected in advance and came in the form of a riso-printed booklet. Each booklet already carried words and graphic contributions from members of the audience, making participation part of the entry point rather than something that followed.

The room
Once inside, the site encouraged exploration beyond the dance floor. People moved freely through a series of interiors, choosing their own interpretation for the night. Some gathered to talk with strangers in Café Vleeshaak — a temporary ‘bruine kroeg’. Others gravitated toward shared creative spaces, painting together on a large canvas that (obviously) gradually expanded onto the surrounding walls. Elsewhere, smaller interventions and installations appeared unexpectedly, while a cinema room offered space to slow down through a carefully curated film programme.

The room
These rooms functioned as places to pause, meet, and exchange — allowing conversation to happen elsewhere. The result was a clear spatial logic. Social interaction dispersed across the site, while the dance floor remained focused and uninterrupted, reserved solely for movement and collective immersion.
