SOUND IS SPACE

Case
Sound has always needed space to exist — not just acoustically, but culturally. Over the past few decades, that space has quietly contracted within the architectural fabric of Antwerp. The irony is difficult to ignore: electronic music was born in deserted warehouses and empty industrial buildings, yet the very urban structures that once made that possible have been steadily reclaimed, renovated, or left to stagnate behind locked doors. Sound Is Space began with a question rather than a brief. If subcultures are continually displaced from the city they helped shape, what does it look like to occupy that space again — deliberately, temporarily, and on its own terms?

The intervention
The answer took the form of the former Proximus Telecom building — a protected heritage site spanning the Meir, Jezusstraat, Cellebroedersstraat, and Lange Nieuwstraat. Designed in the early 1950s by architect Rud Vaes and left vacant since 2019, the building stood as both a symbol of dormancy and an invitation. In 2021, just before its permanent transformation began, two events were organised within its inner corridors.

True community engagement requires active inclusion. The concept aimed to create a compound where everyone was encouraged to define their own role. Collaborators helped conceptualise and build the physical environment. Local artists exhibited their work throughout the corridors. Live drawing and other interactive elements bridged the gap between performer and guest. Dancers are the lifeblood of a night. If they play such a significant role in the energy of a space, the least a space can do is give them a voice.

Underneath the concept was a clear conviction: dancers are not an audience to be entertained, but the primary force that gives a night its character. If their presence shapes the energy of a space so fundamentally, then the structure of the event should reflect that — giving them voice, agency, and room to participate beyond the dance floor itself.
